Over The Rainbow features 40 familiar and well loved songs by Harold Arlen. Arlen is right up there with the other greats we've celebrated at the Pewter Plough: Porter, Coward, Gershwin, Berlin, Kern, Mercer, Rodgers, Hammerstein, and Hart.
Largely unknown today, Arlen is responsible for many of the standards sung over the years by Crosby, Sinatra, Garland and The Marx Brothers(!). Lyricists who worked with Arlen include Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Dorothy Fields and E.Y. Harburg.
Though he wrote songs for stage musicals and revues, it is primarily his film work we remember today. His films include "A Star Is Born," "Cabin In The Sky," "At The Circus," and of course "The Wizard of Oz". Over The Rainbow was voted the number one film song by the American Film Institute based on a moviegoers' poll. It is certainly the most recognizable of Arlen's songs, which also include Blues in the Night, Get Happy, The Man That Got Away, One For My Baby, Stormy Weather, That Old Black Magic, It's Only a Paper Moon, and of course Lydia the Tatooed Lady.
