Two married couples spend the Fourth of July on the deck of a beachfront bungalow on Fire Island, surrounded by people with very different lifestyles from theirs. While they cast a jaundiced eye at the neighbors, they have to deal with more serious issues of their own. Each is tied up in his or her own problems and are unable to relate to or provide comfort to any of the others.
