Dear Friends of the Pewter Plough,
On behalf of everyone at the PPP, we thank you for your support of the Pewter Plough Playhouse, your community theatre!
During 2009, we presented some wonderful plays, including the Pulitzer prize winning Doubt, our own playwriting contest winner Love Town, the enchanting romantic comedy Same Time, Next Year and Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap. However, it has also been a most challenging time, as we continue to be faced with very costly compliance demands by the County and Fire Department. We have made many building improvements, except for fire sprinklers, which are particularly expensive and will require special fund raising to comply. Until sprinklers are installed, our audience capacity is reduced down to 45 (from 61), unfortunately resulting in a corresponding loss of income.
For 2010, we are planning another exciting and stimulating season, beginning with Finishing Touches, one of Jean Kerr's most witty and provocative comedies. The rest of the year will be chosen from Thorton Wilder's classic and profound Pulitzer Prize comedy The Skin of Our Teeth, another Pulitzer winner in Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, James Goldman's famous comic drama The Lion In Winter and our Holiday Musical or a fifth play to be announced (selections always depend upon our being able to cast a play properly).
We are planning to resume our Readers' Theatre program as a 'proving ground' for worthy plays, among which we have selected Danny and the Deep Blue Sea by John Patrick Shanley, Fuddy Meers by David Lindsay-Abaire, Bosoms and Neglect by John Guare, Orson's Shadow by Austin Pendleton, plus many others.
But we need your help! Your Membership and/or Chair Sponsorship is now more vital than ever to meet our challenges and continue to produce quality productions (ticket sales cover less than 60% of our expenses). Our membership tiers are described in the folio enclosed and we acknowledge contributions of $25 or more in all our play programs throughout the year. Our Chair Sponsorships offer the opportunity to sponsor one of our personalized chairs named for a famous Broadway or Hollywood actor. We have several stars' names still available and for $1000 you can have your nameplate appear along with the name of the actor of your choice for ten years (click on Seating Plan button).
We just celebrated our 33d anniversary on December 9th! Please help us sustain our tradition of quality theatre by renewing your membership, becoming a new member or becoming a Chair Sponsor. Our casts and staff are all volunteer. Your generosity is especially appreciated in this uncertain economy and with County compliance work still to be satisfied. We thank you for being part of our Pewter Plough family!
Sincerely,
Jim Buckley
