Fire Sprinkler Completion Allows Playhouse to Reopen!

A Letter From JB, Founder and Artistic Director

(graphic)

December 2010

Over the past three years, we've made many improvements to the Playhouse, including a new emergency exit and staircase, electrical systems and other upgrades. Further, after 34 years, the County required installation of a retrofit automatic fire sprinkler system, including underground excavation and other related work, which was quite expensive. We were forced to close in late February 2010 until the sprinklers were installed.

In 1976, I built and founded the Pewter Plough with my late wife Olga, Lady O; and the Playhouse was dubbed the Jewel Box of Community Theatres for its charming and distinctive atmosphere, a showplace of local talent and an entertainment and cultural treasure enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

I have underwritten the PPP since 1976 but due to severe financial setbacks, I needed a loan of $35,000 to finance the sprinklers. Fortunately, a longtime supporter stepped forward with the loan, at a low interest rate, and in honor of Lady O, for which she deserves tremendous gratitude. (She wishes to remain anonymous). Throughout the project, we have also appreciated the assistance of Chief Mark Miller of the Cambria Fire Department.

The sprinkler construction will be completed in a few weeks and has been accomplished very successfully and our cherished PPP can reopen. A fund drive has been started to help pay off the loan, which made the reopening possible, and contributions of any amount are most welcome (regrettably, not tax-deductible). Contributions can be made payable to the Pewter Plough Sprinkler Fund. Contributors will be acknowledged in all our play programs.

Thank you sincerely and see you at the Playhouse in our 35th year!
