Join us for a rare event: the putting together of a musical show to celebrate JB's 100th year, during this holiday season! That's Jim Buckley, the founder and Artistic Director of the Pewter Plough Playhouse, who has led an amazing life and will be celebrating his 100th birthday this December — a genuine and exuberant man of the century!
The scene is a meeting of the Great American Songbook Society, whose members are gathered together to select and put together the music and stories about JB that will go into their surprise musical celebrating their head honcho's life. You'll hear about 40 fabulous songs from the Great American Songbook, from composers such as Cole Porter, Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern, Noel Coward, Stephen Sondheim and many others. Woven around the songs, you'll hear fascinating stories about JB's many exotic exploits as a multi-faceted, renaissance designer: his success as a renowned fashion window display trendsetter in New York and Beverly Hills at Saks Fifth Avenue and other stores, Art Director for TV, Disneyland's Tomorrowland, Movieland Wax Museum, author, noted hotel and restaurant designer and numerous other adventures!
What comes across in all the tales of his endeavors is how he's had a lifelong love affair with live theatre, this having had a profound effect on his life and everything he's done — and finally causing him, along with his Lady O, as you'll hear during the show, to build and open the Pewter Plough Playhouse in 1976, now in its 36th continuous season in Cambria!
Some of the songs included in the show are Ain't Misbehavin'; All The Things You Are; You Make Me Feel So Young; I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby; I'll See You Again; Everything's Coming Up Roses; You Do Something To Me; When You Wish Upon A Star; It Had To Be You; The Way You Look Tonight; Body and Soul and many others.
The members of the Great American Songbook Society and cast for this show comprise the old gang known to playgoers from our recent holiday musicals, including Viv Goff, Jim Conroy, Laurelle Barnett, Wayne Attoe and Dave Manion at the piano. This show has been written by Dave Manion and Viv Goff, based on columns written by Jim Buckley over the years for the Playhouse. Show directed by Viv Goff. Music direction by Dave Manion. The Stage Managers are Anita Schwaber and Colleen Spiller.
September Song is the 12th in our series of original PPP musicals, all but one written by Jim Buckley. These have consisted of musical tributes to Noel Coward (the first), Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, George and Ira Gershwin (twice), Lorenz (Larry) Hart, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer* and Harold Arlen. (*not written by JB)
The show runs from Nov 16 through Dec 31, 2012, including New Year's Eve.
