A.R. Gurney's

The Fourth Wall

A Playful Comedy About the Theatre and Life Itself!

Oct 7 - 30, 2011

With Live Cole Porter Songs

One of the favorite plays of well-known author A.R. Gurney, The Fourth Wall, opens at the Playhouse on the weekend of October 7 for only a four week run. It's a lively and thought-provoking comedy in which the stage and acting principles are cleverly used to poke fun at American life in general, both serious and silly, raising questions about art and politics and contemporary reality, as well as the state of theatre itself — virtually everything is covered! Mixed into the show are live performances of several spirited Cole Porter songs, plus those of other composers. The heroine of the play becomes obsessed with rearranging her home as if it were a stage, as well as with her urge to connect with the unseen audience, and soon everyone behaves as if they were acting in a play, including breaking into the occasional song!

...debonair, thought-provoking and funny — The New Yorker

clever, sophisticated and deliciously devious — The New York Times

...a whimsical meditation on the theatre, its degradation in the video age and its enduring potential — Chicago Sun-Times

A strong argument can be made that nothing (Gurney) has written before is this good — Milwaukee Journal

A.R. Gurney is one of America's boldest, most adventurous and premier playwrights. His plays include Sylvia, Love Letters and The Cocktail Hour. His plays have earned him Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and Rockefeller awards.

The cast features Jean Miller, David Norum, John Carroll and Diane Steele. The director is Gene Strohl.
